Solar-powered house

So apparently I can get my house outfitted for solar power and write it off on my taxes. Unfortunately, it costs about $30,000 to buy and install all of the equipment. I'm unsure if this will, in the end, become free due to tax savings/rebates. Does anybody know a little more about this? Is it worth doing, or more trouble than it is worth?

Options for keeping cool

It's hot, and that's a fact. There is the option for central air, window units, and now there are these new room units that sit up on the wall that are advertised on TV (which I am skeptical of). What is the most cost-effective method for cooling off a 1 story house with 3 rooms? I'm looking for long-term solutions.

Fake plants

So let's just say I don't quite have a green thumb. As far as property value goes, would planting fake plants in lieu of real plants have any real effect on property value? I'm trying to sell one of my rentals and don't want to spend every day watering plants and trimming bushes.

How is the housing market there? I don't really want to spend an arm and a leg compared to other places to live. Is there a difference in relative home prices between inner-city, outer-city, and rural homes? I would be open to an apartment as well.

Installing locks on windows

I'm trying to put locks on my windows for obvious reasons. The guy at the store told me I needed to buy a chisel so I can carve a depression into the frame and put the lock in the carved-out slot. This sounds really complicated seeing as how I've never done chisel work before. Are there any other methods of putting a lock on my window?
